How often to post and how much?

One of the things that concerned me when I started blogging was how often I would have to post. Some days I just don’t feel like writing or nothing comes up that I find worthy of posting about.

I started researching the various blogger sites like ProBlogger.net for articles and information on what kind of recommendations they had on content size and frequency. From what I have been reading, it seems that how frequently you post is related to amount of content in your posts. The longer your posts, the less frequently you would need to post. If you post a lot of small posts every day like I Can Has Cheezeburger, you can keep your writing to a minimum but need to be very prolific in numbers of posts. If you write really long posts, like several thousand words, you can get away with posting once or twice a week as most will need to fit the reading time into daily schedule.

When I started blogging most of my posts were really short but they have started to get longer as I become comfortable with writing as well as more frequent as I get into a routine. I figured since I can usually find something at least once a day to get a small to medium sized post, I would need to add at least one longer post per week.

In an effort to help me keep the content coming and generate longer posts, I’ve taken to adding a weekly feature as well as trying this multi-part series on blogging. I’m also developing a blog that’s going to feature a daily pet photo and a weekly serial adventure story to go with the pet photos.

There’s a lot of people out there giving advice on how much content your blog needs to be successful, but I’m more in the school of quality over quantity so as long as your giving your readers what they expect, it’s enough content. The general rule seems to be that you need enough content to give people a reason to want to stay updated with your site and that will bring us to next week’s Part IV of my series in Developing My Corner of the Blogosphere.

Cheers!
